29.09 Courts Should Win Russians’ Trust – PM Medvedev

SOCHI, September 29 (RIA Novosti) – Russia’s judiciary should win the trust of the country’s nationals, and this cannot be achieved by means of a judicial reform, the Russian prime minister has said.

Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev gave an interview to the Rossiya 24 TV channel on Saturday.

Asked why the judicial system is not being reformed, Medvedev said: “Our courts probably do not need a reform. We carried out a court reform in the 1990s and kept improving our legislation on justice… during the previous decade.”

He said Russia has rather up-to-date laws on justice, adding that the problem is, in particular, about “the general trust in the court system.”

“I think such an atmosphere of trust cannot be established by means of reforms. The judicial system should, in the process of its development, earn the respect of everyone who turns to it on its own,” Medvedev said.
