18.02 Netherlands Sweep Podium at Speedskating 10,000m in Sochi

SOCHI, February 18 (R-Sport) – Jorrit Bergsma of the Netherlands won the speedskating 10,000m gold in an Olympic record time Tuesday to deny his more decorated countryman Sven Kramer the distance double for a second-consecutive Winter Games.

A fourth Dutch podium sweep at the Sochi Games was led by the 28-year-old Bergsma, who scorched around the Adler Arena track in 12 minutes, 44.45 seconds.

It killed the expected storyline of two-time 5,000m champion Kramer vanquishing his nightmare in Vancouver, when he was disqualified after winning the 10,000m for an illegal lane change.

Instead, Kramer had to settle for the silver with a time of 12:49.02, four seconds slower than his teammate. The bronze medal went to 37-year-old Bob de Jong, who also claimed the bronze in Vancouver and runs up his fourth medal in four different Games going back to Nagano 1998.

Kramer last week won the Sochi 5,000m with Bergsma claiming the silver.

It's a sixth Dutch speedskating gold at these Games, which is also a record.
