08.11 ICRC Holds Meeting in Mali to Boost Adherence to International Humanitarian Law

MOSCOW, November 8 (RIA Novosti) - The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has held a meeting in Mali's capital Bamako in a bid to boost the country's adherence to international humanitarian law, a release issued on Saturday by the organization said.

"It is the responsibility of lawmakers to enact legislation that will incorporate international humanitarian law in domestic legislation in an effective manner," head of the ICRC's delegation Christoph Luedi said in the release.

Among those who attended the meeting were members of the Malian parliament, who will be updated on the trends of compliance with international humanitarian law that Mali has registered.

Luedi noted that even though Mali has ratified all treaties of international humanitarian law, it has not yet included them in its national legislation.

International humanitarian law comprises rules on the scale of hostilities during armed conflict so that to protect civilians.
